Sweaters and bugs

This time of year, we clean lots of sweaters. Unfortunately, sweaters are also popular with bugs in your home. Here’s what they do: eat! These little creatures may be attracted to the fiber content, the finish, or a spill –no matter how small. Sometimes insects will chomp a small but visible hole in your sweater. Other times, they will eat just enough to weaken the fiber, and with a little agitation (such as a standard dry cleaning or laundering process) a “new” hole is found after the sweater has been cleaned. When that happens, the damage is permanent. Please know, the dry cleaner didn’t cause this hole and it couldn’t have been prevented by the dry cleaner.
So, how do you prevent insect damage?
– store your clothes in a cedar closet
– buy cedar blocks to put in your closet
– clean your clothes whenever there is a spill, even a small one
