Job search tips

At The Green Van, we need to have reliable route drivers and team members to serve our customers.  I have hired many folks over the years, mostly college-age and people in their early 20’s.  This means that I have interviewed many, many people over the years as well.  I would like to offer several basic tips for candidates who are interviewing and search for jobs, especially for younger people:

  • Dress appropriately for your interview.  No jeans.  For non-professional jobs, business casual is usually fine.  Wear an ironed or pressed shirt and pressed khaki pants.  Men: tuck your shirt in.
  • Bring a notebook and pen.  This should be obvious, but very few of my job candidates ever do this.
  • Put your notebook and pen in a notebook portfolio.  Just a basic one from Office Max or Walmart is fine.  This shows that you are organized and that you take the interview seriously.
  • Bring two copies of your résumé/work history/education with you.  Give one to the person who is interviewing you, and have a copy for yourself.
  • Print the front page of the company’s website.  Bring it along.  It shows the interviewer that you have taken at least 30 seconds to research the company.
  • Have 2-3 questions written, and ask them of the interviewer.  This shows that you are interested.  Here are some examples:

1.  What makes your company better than the competition?

2.  What challenges does your company face currently?

3.  What are some traits of your best employees over the years?  Your worst employees?

One of the things that I look for is a consistent work history.  I do not want to hire someone who has worked for 5 different companies in the last 4 years.  When I see a resume of a young person who has worked for the same restaurant, grocery store, or other job for a couple of years, I’m interested!  I know that this person has the ability to stick with something.  Most likely, this person is teachable, reliable, consistent, and able to get along with others.

If you know a young person who is looking for a job, please pass this information along to them.  I promise that it will help them along their path.
