Derek’s business philosophy

Derek Anderson, owner, in front of one of our green vans

I just saw that Silpada Jewelry is shutting its doors.  Wow.  That is really too bad.  I know that they have been a very positive presence in our community, and I wish nothing but the best for everyone connected with them.

On a smaller scale, other dry cleaners in Johnson County have shut down over the past several years.  Being in business is tough, and I know that.  We started in 2003 with zero customers, a van, a couple boxes of laundry bags, and some flyers.  We have been able to grow our business over the past several years, and I am optimistic that we will continue to grow in 2016.

I want to share with you some of my business philosophies that have helped us to weather the rough seasons and grow in the better seasons of our business’s life.

Risk:  I’m pretty conservative.  I think about the worst case scenario.  If a risk would completely fail, would my company survive it?  If the answer is “no”, then I don’t even think about proceeding -no  matter what the potential upside would be.

Build to last:  We maintain our equipment proactively.  We are insured and we have always purchased workers compensation insurance even when we weren’t required to.  We pay our team well for the jobs they do.  We make sure that we are profitable, so that we can continue to serve our customers.

Employees:  I hire people whom I can trust.  They need to be coachable and able to work independently.  No drama please.

Service offerings:  We offer services to customers that they need regularly.  We want customers who use dry cleaning as a regular part of their lifestyle.  We aren’t a good fit for folks who only need dry cleaning once or twice a year.  We are good at executing our tasks, and we want to do them over and over.  For example, when we began to offer laundry wash and fold service, it was a natural fit with this philosophy.

Pricing:  My goal is to be competitive with the market, but I don’t need to be the cheapest.  We offer a value that is unique in our market:  pickup and delivery with next business day turnaround for most items.  There will always be someone who wants to compete on price alone.  That is a race to the bottom, and I literally cannot afford to participate in that.

Limits to our service:  We just can’t do everything or be everywhere.  I’ve had to say no to potential customers who don’t live in our market area.  We serve Overland Park, Leawood, and east Olathe.  As of today (5/25/16), our routes don’t go north of 95th Street.  Those could change, but we will manage that carefully.

Humility:  I know that dry cleaning and laundry is not the most exciting thing in anyone’s lives.  We are simply offering a service that meets a need, and helps to make peoples’ lives easier.

Systems:  We have implemented processes and systems to automate many of our daily functions.  Following the system makes it easier for my team to do their jobs well.  It makes it easier for me to manage my team.  It also increases our ability to provide consistent service to you, our customers.

Do what’s best for the company:  This is a concept that QuikTrip lives by.  If my team and I make decisions with the best interest of our company in mind, we have the best chance to succeed!

Life Balance:  This is hard!  As a business owner, your business feels like one of your kids.  But I’m learning to trust my team more.

Thanks for your interest in The Green Van Dry Cleaning & Laundry.  Our goal is to make life easier for you!
